Your Pet’s Resolution for the New Year – Your Role

January 2026 |⏱️ 5 min read

As the calendar turns to a new year, humans tend to make promises to themselves, New Year’s resolutions. We vow to eat healthier, spend less time doom-scrolling, exercise consistently… we’ve all been there.  As a pet owner, have you ever imagined what your dog or cat would make as their resolution for the new year?

While we haven’t conducted verified studies, we’re pretty confident these are some things your pet would prioritize.

  1. More time and devoted attention to them
  2. Dogs – daily walks or trips to a park
  3. Cats – more personal space and freedom to zoom at will
  4. Buddy Control – Either a friend or relief from a constant companion
  5. Peace and tranquility for the whole family

Let’s look at why your pet might want each of these things and how you, their human caretaker, can help them achieve their goals.

More time and devoted attention: It’s been said that pets are a huge part of our lives, but we are their entire lives. That’s really true. We dictate everything they experience. We leave for the day and they wait for us. Dogs act as if we’ve been gone for months if we’re out of the house for more than a few moments. If you leave town for a week or more your cat may acknowledge your return, but they probably actually missed you more than they let on. Dogs and cats are social animals and need time and attention to prevent boredom and anxiety. Putting down the phone and giving them our undivided attention strengthens the bond with them and allows you to complete necessary tasks such as grooming or trimming their nails. It can also help them feel secure and loved.

Daily walks or trips to the park for dogs: The key here is consistent activity to prevent boredom, obesity, and behavioral issues. Many of the dog breeds we keep in our homes with us today were bred to complete specific jobs. The Great Pyrenees lounging on your couch has years of breeding that makes them ideal livestock guardians. Your Dachshund was bred to be a burrowing, tenacious hunting dog.  Maybe you have an Aussie that wants to herd, a Husky that would rather be pulling a sled, or a Newfoundland that is willing to jump in frigid waters for a day’s work. Even little terriers were bred to hunt vermin. The point is these dogs were not bred to lay in our house, or be crated all day, just waiting for us to notice them.  Do your pup a favor and keep them active. It can be a daily walk, a trip to a dog park, a training class or even a day at doggie day care that allows them to interact and play with other dogs. Know your dog and their limitations and always keep a close eye on them to avoid overexertion or injuries.

Keep your dog engaged and active all year long

Space and freedom for cats: While cats are stereotypically considered aloof, some are quite friendly and cuddly. The truth is most cats do need personal space for their emotional well-being. Cats decompress in safe solitary spots. While they do need your time and attention, they need that to be balanced with quiet time and don’t need constant interaction.  The daily wag published this guide to tell when your cat needs space from you.  And the freedom to Zoom? Cats need that too.  The scientific name is frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs). This is just a healthy release of energy. Sit back and enjoy the chaotic show.

Pet Friends: You may have seen the “I got my dog a dog” trend on social media.  Some reels make it look like pure sunshine and rainbows while others focus on the challenges and some even later update the dog for their dog didn’t work out. This comes down to understanding and respecting your existing pet and meeting them where they are now. A young exuberant puppy may really benefit from a companion, if you have the time and energy to care for and train both. An older cat or dog may like their solitude and place of honor in the home and resent any new addition. Allow your pet space away from other pets if they seem to be correcting the other animal frequently. Work on training the new pet to respect boundaries. Don’t force situations if the animals are displaying signs of aggression. Remember they are animals, and instinct will often dictate behavior. Take time to introduce new pets at a pace that works for everyone and only commit if you have the time and resources to manage multiple animals.

Peace & tranquility for the family: Most of all, your pet wants you to be happy and to have a secure, peaceful home. Just like us, sometimes modern life is overwhelming for our animal companions. If your animal seems to be dealing with excessive anxiety or stress, speak with your veterinarian. Applying the suggestions here may help alleviate some symptoms of stress. There are also many products available that can help your dog or cat relax and a multi-faceted approach is often warranted.  Depending on your pet, you may find pressure wraps, noise reduction techniques, supplements, calming items, or pheromone products help relieve stress for your dog or cat.

Additional Tips:

  1. Schedule an annual check-up or dental cleaning for your pet
  2. Help your pet control their weight by limiting treats along with regular exercise
  3. Consider puzzle feeders or other mentally stimulating toys for your dog or cat
  4. Plan a 15-minute phone detox to give your pet undivided attention every day
  5. Realize your pet’s resolution might benefit you too!

Summary: Your pet is family. They almost certainly don’t care about the calendar date and just want a safe, loving home. As their human guardian you can help them stay happy, healthy and calm throughout the year by providing a secure and safe home, consistent exercise, the support they need when dealing with anxiety and stress, and lots of love and cuddles.  Remember, New Year’s resolutions aren’t about perfection; even small changes in our daily routine can make a world of difference in our pets’ lives.
